Understanding the cost of care at home

Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)
-
Eligibility: 65+ (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)
-
Assessment: Through My Aged Care
-
Fees: Government covers most of the cost; you pay a small contribution (VMCH CHSP fees start at $7.00).

Home Care Packages (until 31 October 2025)
- Eligibility: Australians aged 65+ (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people)
- Assessment: Through My Aged Care
- Fees: The government provides a set budget based on your assessed care level (Levels 1–4). You may be asked to contribute an income-tested fee. VMCH offers transparent pricing, with care management fees capped at 10% and service rates clearly outlined.

Support at Home (from 1 November 2025)
It combines the Home Care Packages program and Short-Term Restorative Care into one simplified system, making it easier to access the right services.
How it works:
-
You’ll have one assessment to determine your care classification
-
Services will be grouped into clinical care, independence, and everyday living
-
You may pay a co-contribution based on your income.
VMCH will support you through the transition and help you get the most from your funding.

Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC)
STRC offers short-term support to help older Australians regain independence and delay entry into long-term care.
Funded by the Australian Government, STRC includes services like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, personal care, and domestic assistance.
- Eligibility: Older people recovering from illness, slowing down physically or mentally, or needing help with daily tasks
- Assessment: Through My Aged Care
- Fees: Many care services are government-funded, though you may be asked to contribute depending on your individual care needs.
